Psalm 88 is not one of David’s psalms, but a “psalm of the sons of Korah.” The descendants of Korah were a clan within the priestly tribe of Levi. The Korahites specialized in various jobs related to temple worship. Some were temple gatekeepers, some baked showbread (unleavened loaves of bread for the altar), and some were temple singers.

At least a third of the 150 psalms can be considered psalms of lament—psalms that deal with human trouble and the struggle to keep the faith in spite of it. All of these psalms—with the exception of Psalm 88—move from the darkness of suffering into the light of God’s deliverance.
